Reception and Mediation of Foreign and Comparative Literature and Culture (Rémélice)

The RÉMÉLICE laboratory brings together teacher-researchers and doctoral students working in the fields of arts, literature, languages and human and social sciences from an international perspective, with a particular interest in the study of language-cultures and the notion of cultural transfer.

Research topics :

Based on the cultures of European societies (France, Spain, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Portugal) and other cultural areas (United States, South America, Asia - Japan and China), the laboratory’s team plans to develop its field of research around two main areas:

1. Cultures and citizenship: representations, transmissions, transformations

This research area examines the evolving concept of citizenship within contemporary societies, particularly in the context of liberal democracies facing crises. It explores how cultural, linguistic, and political shifts—such as the rise of populism, debates on national identity, and the resurgence of discussions around race and systemic discrimination—challenge traditional notions of the social contract. By analyzing these dynamics, the research aims to understand the processes of inclusion and exclusion that shape collective identities. Key themes include the interplay between citizenship and culture, the role of narratives in nation-building, and the impact of globalization on sovereignty and cultural transformations

2. Decentering: creative and critical dynamics.

This area focuses on the concept of "decentering" as a methodological and theoretical approach to research. Decentering involves shifting perspectives to challenge dominant narratives and highlight marginalized voices. It encourages transdisciplinary and transcultural analyses that question established hierarchies and promote new ways of understanding cultural and literary phenomena. Research topics include the role of translation in cultural exchange, the representation of migration in literature and the arts, and the exploration of insularity as a metaphor for cultural and literary marginalization. By embracing decentering, the laboratory seeks to foster innovative approaches that reflect the complexity and diversity of global cultures.
