Despite significant improvements, serious air pollution problems still persist worldwide and are becoming more and more complex and varying from one region to another. Science and technologies are required to provide solutions and alternatives. Therefore, a scientifically sound understanding is urgently needed to disclose the key reasons for regional complex air pollution problems and for the effective implementation of control measures.

The emphasis of the present conference will be on air quality improvement and future challenges where the science and new technologies development constitute the backbone for any proposed solutions. The meeting aims at bringing together scientists from different fields (chemistry physics, meteorology, epidemiology,…), industry and representatives of local governments (e.g., cities, regions…), in order to share their recent research progress relating to regional complex air pollution.

This Workshop is organised as part of the PIVOTS Programme (Environmental Technology Innovation, Development and Optimisation Platforms).

The PIVOTS project is a coordinated set of seven experimental and analytical platforms focused on environmental quality monitoring and sustainable management of natural resources (soil, subsurface, surface water, groundwater, sediment and air) within a context of global change (increased anthropogenic pressure and climate change).

The innovation through PIVOTS will be founded on an integrated approach based on excellent research by academic and industrial experts together at all stages of the value chain, from fundamental research to validation of products and services.

The platforms are identified as:

  • DECAP: Development of Environmental Sensors and Pollutants Removal Processes
  • PRIME: Remediation and Innovation in the Service of Environmental Metrology
  • O-ZNS: Observatory of transport in the Unsaturated Zone
  • PERMECA: Testing and Research Platform in Collaborative and Applied Environmental Mechanics
  • PESAT: Soil - Atmosphere exchanges in peat bogs
  • PESAA: Soil - Atmosphere exchanges in Agricultural soils
  • PRAT: Atmospheric Reactivity

The teams involved originate from BRGM (French Geological Survey), University of Orléans, CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), INRA (National Institute for Agricultural Research), Antea Group (consulting and engineering), DREAM (cluster of enterprises) and LE STUDIUM (Loire Valley Institute for Advanced Studies).

The conference venue is unique. Located right next to the Orléans’ cathedral, the episcopal palace of Orléans, built between 1635 and 1641, locally known as the Hôtel Dupanloup, is a classical French building which served until 1905 of residence to the bishops of Orléans.  Since 2014, the renewed palace hosts the International University Center for Research and Le Studium Loire Valley Institute for Advanced Studies.

Participants will be welcomed in this exceptional surrounding, blending Middle Age and Renaissance cultures with modern design and will have the opportunity to discover French cuisine and wines.

    • PRAT: Atmospheric reactivity studies platform : visit of HELIOS, the atmospheric simulation chamber with natural irradiation of Orleans and the VOLTAIRE super-site (CNRS site).
      PESAt: Platform on the Exchanges of GHG between Soils and the Atmosphere in peatland: visit of the experiment simulating an increase of the air temperatures and a water table drawdown (CNRS site).
      PRIME: Visit of the BRGM Hall where PRIME is being built:  description of the future Platforms and presentation of some already active experimental set-ups (BRGM site).
      DECAP: Sensors development and depollution process for water monitoring: visit of the platform in ICMN laboratory, with a focus on the development of inovative solutions for the detection and the remediation of micropollutants in natural and waste waters (CNRS site).
