Presentation

This conference brings together Early Modern correspondence specialists to study the editions of letters between the 16th and 18th centuries. By doing so, we intend to consider the question of reputation, which was fundamental at the time. From Erasmus to Voltaire, the Early Modern period is punctuated by editorial projects dedicated to printing letters from famous personalities. Therefore, the conference wishes to study this editorial practice while highlighting each century's specificities and each sphere of activity: scholarly letters, diplomatic letters, political letters, personal, fictitious letters, etc. Indeed, if there is a document capable of forever tarnishing one’s reputation, it is a letter disclosed without consent. Inexhaustible material in literature, the letter stolen and copied, even printed, clearly shows how editing correspondence is likely to affect, for better or worse, one's reputation. This conference aims to reflect on the effects on reputation caused by publishing letters between the Renaissance and the end of the 18th century.
