Tribute to Mark-Oliver Goerbig
Le Studium is deeply saddened to share the news that Mark-Oliver Goerbig passed away on 2 September 2025. He had worked as a permanent CNRS researcher at the Laboratoire de Physique des Solides in Orsay since 2005, and had been a professor at the École Polytechnique in Palaiseau since 2012. He was a valued member of the Le Studium Scientific Council from 2017, quickly becoming one of its most prominent figures. His reputation as a theoretical physicist of the highest calibre was matched only by his remarkable human qualities. Le Studium was honoured to experience his extensive scientific knowledge, clear judgement, outstanding scientific intuition, remarkable mathematical skills, inexhaustible capacity for work, and keen interest in all scientific matters beyond his own field of research. Mark-Oliver was very generous with his ideas and greatly enjoyed mentoring and inspiring young researchers, as well as other members of the Le Studium Scientific Council, where his insights on all subjects were highly valued. His appetite for science, music, history and gastronomy was insatiable. Our sincere condolences go to his scientific team, colleagues, and family.
