BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Petros S. Tzimas is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), working in the fields of natural products chemistry, metabolomics, and sustainable extraction technologies. He obtained his Pharmacy degree and completed his PhD in Pharmacognosy and Natural Products Chemistry at NKUA in 2023 under the supervision of Prof. Leandros A. Skaltsounis. His doctoral research focused on the phytochemical and metabolomic investigation of Cannabis sativa L., providing expertise in the extraction, isolation, and analysis of complex natural products. His research explores plant-derived bioactive compounds through modern phytochemical approaches and advanced chromatographic, spectrometric, and spectroscopic techniques. His work also includes the development of green extraction methodologies, including supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), supported by Design of Experiments (DoE) optimization strategies.
His interests further involve innovative approaches for accessible quality assessment, particularly alternative microsampling techniques for natural product analysis. Overall, his work aims to support the sustainable exploration, characterization, and valorization of bioactive natural ingredients for potential applications in the health, cosmetic, and food sectors.
PROJECT
GreenCosmIn - Green chemistry and biotechnology approaches for the development of nature-based cosmetics
GreenCosmIn is a Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Staff Exchanges (MSCA-SE, GAN 101131346) project dedicated to the development of nature-based cosmetic ingredients through the integration of green chemistry, biotechnology, and advanced analytical approaches. The project, coordinated by NKUA (Prof. Maria Halabalaki), brings together an international and interdisciplinary network of academic and industrial partners working on the sustainable exploration of bioactive plant resources from biodiversity hotspots across Europe and beyond. Combining expertise in natural products chemistry, metabolomics, biotechnology, cosmetology, and biological evaluation, GreenCosmIn promotes innovative strategies for the discovery, characterization, and valorization of natural ingredients with potential cosmetic applications.
Within this framework, the research activities include environmentally friendly extraction and fractionation of selected plants, advanced profiling and analytical characterization, and bioactivity evaluation of natural extracts and compounds, towards cosmetic applications. The programme also aims to promote scientific exchange and knowledge transfer between partner institutions, strengthening collaborations in the fields of green chemistry, natural ingredients, and sustainable cosmetic innovation.
